The formation of shells Shells usually grow outside of molluscs. The main function of shells is to support the animal body. They can protect the animal body from being eaten by the enemy, and it can also protect the animal body from excessive drying and death. The shell is formed by calcium carbonate secreted by the marginal cells of the mantle. A large amount of calcium carbonate is contained in the blood of mollusks. These calcium carbonates are absorbed by mollusks from water and food. The cells at the edge of the mantle can concentrate calcium carbonate in the blood and make them form mineral knots similar to calcite and aragonite. The crystalline form of Aragonite is the nacre. The shell is the first secretion formed by the shell, which is formed by the outer part of the mantle. Shells are usually divided into three layers: outer shell, middle shell and inner shell. The general crystals of the middle shell layer are mostly elongated, so it is also called the prismatic layer. The chitinous crystals in the inner shell layer are irregularly arranged and sometimes show a dazzling luster, also known as the nacre layer. After the outer shell layer is formed, calcium carbonate forms the middle shell layer and the inner shell layer on the inner surface of the outer shell layer. The middle shell layer is the layer between the outer shell layer and the inner shell layer, and usually does not touch the muscles. Mollusks use many pieces of muscle tissue to attach their bodies to shells. If the shell is damaged, the mantle will immediately secrete extra chitin to repair the shell.
